Life with a Dachshund: What Every Owner Should Know
Dachshunds — affectionately known as wiener dogs, sausage dogs, or doxies — are bold, curious, and endlessly entertaining. Originally bred to hunt badgers, they have a surprisingly fearless personality for their size. But their long back and short legs come with specific health considerations that every owner needs to understand.
The Dachshund Spine: Your #1 Priority
Dachshunds are the breed most commonly affected by intervertebral disc disease (IVDD). Up to 25% of Dachshunds will experience a spinal issue in their lifetime. This is entirely manageable with the right precautions:
- Use a ramp or steps everywhere they jump — sofas, beds, car seats
- Never let them jump down from heights, even small ones
- Keep them at a healthy weight — every extra pound dramatically increases spinal pressure
- Choose a harness over a collar to protect the neck and distribute pressure
Must-Have Accessories for Dachshund Owners
1. A Proper Dachshund Harness
A well-fitting harness is non-negotiable. Look for one with a chest-first design that fits around the Dachshund's deep chest without restricting their front legs. Avoid any harness that clips near the back of the neck.
2. Dog Ramps & Steps
Invest in at least one ramp for furniture and one for the car. Low-incline ramps are best. Train your doxie to use them from puppyhood — most take to it quickly with treat motivation.
3. Dachshund-Themed Accessories
Dachshund owners are famously proud of their breed — and for good reason! Our Dachshund accessories collection at People Paw includes themed items perfect for doxie lovers. They also make wonderful gifts.
4. Coats & Sweaters
Miniature and smooth-coated Dachshunds are especially sensitive to cold. A well-fitted dog coat for winter walks is a must, not just a fashion statement.
5. Puzzle Toys
Dachshunds have a strong prey drive and love to dig and investigate. Snuffle mats, hide-and-seek toys, and foraging feeders are perfect for keeping their scent-driven brains engaged.
Grooming Your Dachshund
Care varies by coat type:
- Smooth-coated: Minimal grooming — a weekly wipe-down and occasional bath is enough
- Long-haired: Brush 2–3 times per week to prevent tangles, especially around the ears
- Wire-haired: Needs hand-stripping a couple of times a year; otherwise brush weekly
Don't forget nail trims every 3–4 weeks and ear cleaning every couple of weeks — Dachshunds are prone to ear infections due to their floppy ears.
Exercise: Getting the Balance Right
Dachshunds need about 30–60 minutes of moderate exercise per day. Their short legs mean they tire on rough terrain faster than larger breeds. Great activities include:
- On-leash neighborhood walks
- Off-leash play in a safely fenced yard
- Scent games and nose work indoors
- Short agility courses (low jumps only)
Avoid repetitive high-impact activities like long runs or jumping agility courses with tall obstacles.
Feeding & Weight Management
Obesity is the biggest preventable health risk for Dachshunds. Feed measured portions twice daily and resist those pleading eyes — they are very good at begging. A high-protein, moderate-fat diet works well for most doxies. Always consult your vet for personalized recommendations.
